Bharatiya Janata Party is celebrating its foundation day today. It was established on this day in 1980. Earlier it was recognized as Bharatiya Jana Sangh from 1951 to 1977 and as Janata Party from 1977-80. The saffron party once had two MPs in its parliament. Today, under the leadership of Narendra Modi, there is a government of absolute majority for two consecutive terms. Earlier, under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, BJP formed a coalition government at the Centre. However, he also faced a no-confidence motion from the opposition.
Before voting on the no-confidence motion, Vajpayee gave a brilliant speech in Parliament. On this day he narrated the austerity of the BJP. In his speech in Parliament, he had said, ‘A lot of penance has been done to build the BJP. This is not a mushroom party.
Excerpts from Vajpayee’s speech:
There are parties of one person in the house. They are trying to remove us by ganging up against us. They have every right to try. But he is one. One person party. Let’s go alone Come and get together in Delhi. Why get together? Welcome for the good of the country. We are also serving the country in our own way. We have served the country selflessly. Tried to make his place in politics.
40 years of sadhana is behind these efforts of ours. This is not an accidental mandate. It’s not a miracle that happened. BJP has worked hard. We have gone to the people. We have fought. BJP is a 365 days lasting party. This is not a party to stand like a mushroom in an election.
