Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir
Islamabad: Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has said that any attempt to weaken the country’s army is tantamount to weakening the country. General Munir addressed the Azadi Parade at the Pakistan Military Academy on the eve of Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day. During this, the Army Chief also underlined the importance of maintaining national unity amid efforts by foreign forces using ‘digital terrorism’ to create a rift between the country’s institutions and the people of Pakistan.
‘We have emerged stronger after every difficulty’
General Asim Munir said, “We have emerged as a strong nation despite hardships and tribulations. Weakening the armed forces of Pakistan is tantamount to weakening the country itself.” He said the nation’s unwavering faith in the Pakistan Army is the army’s most valuable asset. No negative force has ever been able to weaken this relationship of trust and love nor can it do so in the future. He said, “Historically, as a nation we have always emerged stronger after every difficulty.” The Army Chief said mutual trust between the country and the armed forces has played a vital role.
Munir admitted terrorism is a threat
He also highlighted the importance of unity and warned that discord and division could undermine the nation from within, paving the way for external aggression, The Express Tribune newspaper reported. Gen Munir also acknowledged the ongoing threat of extremism and terrorism in the region and reaffirmed the armed forces’ resolve to continue making sacrifices for the nation’s security. He blamed foreign forces for the wave of “digital terrorism” and said it was aimed at driving a wedge between state institutions and the people of Pakistan, Dawn newspaper reported.
General Munir had said this
Addressing a conference of Islamic clerics here last week, Gen Munir had warned against attempts to create anarchy in the cash-strapped country and said the armed forces would thwart any such move and protect national integrity. Meanwhile, at least 70 people were injured in aerial firing in various areas of Karachi during Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday night, Geo News reported. Last year, two people were killed and over 80 injured in aerial firing in various areas of the city during Independence Day celebrations. (Language)
