PM Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meeting at the G7 in Italy.
Bari (Italy): The formal meeting between PM Modi and the Canadian Prime Minister during the G7 summit held in Italy from 13 to 15 June surprised many. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the picture of his meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister on his X handle, it created a stir. This meeting between the two leaders took place at a time when tensions between India and Canada have been at their peak for the last several months. After participating in the G20 summit held in India in November 2023, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau created a sensation by accusing India in the murder case of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar as soon as he returned to his country. However, India immediately rejected his allegations as baseless.
Since then, the tension between the two countries has reached its peak. But the sudden meeting of the two leaders in G7 surprised everyone. Till now no one had any information about what PM Modi said to Justin Trudeau during the meeting and what was discussed between the two leaders in this brief meeting. But now Justin Trudeau himself has revealed what was discussed between the two leaders.
Justin Trudeau revealed his priorities after the meeting
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday said there is a commitment to work together with India to tackle some “very important issues” after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 summit. Modi on Friday posted a photo of the two leaders shaking hands on social media, saying, “Met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G7 Summit.” The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Apulia in southern Italy, is the first meeting amid strained diplomatic ties over pro-Khalistan extremism. The allegations levelled by Canada last year were strongly rejected by the Indian foreign ministry as “absurd and motivated”. “I won’t go into the details of this important, sensitive issue that we need to work on further. But it is a commitment to work together to tackle some very important issues in the times to come,” Trudeau told reporters at a press conference at the conclusion of the three-day G7 summit on Saturday.
What happened between Trudeau and Modi?
Soon after the meeting in Italy on Friday evening, the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office said that we had a “brief discussion during the meeting on bilateral relations”. During this, Trudeau also congratulated Modi on his re-election. “Of course, there are important issues between our two countries at this time. You can understand that we will not make any further statement at this time,” the Canadian Press news agency quoted spokesperson Anne-Clara Vaillancourt as saying. India has been saying that the main issue between the two countries is that Canada is providing space to pro-Khalistan elements operating from its territory. India has repeatedly conveyed its “deep concerns” to Canada and New Delhi hopes that Ottawa will take strong action against those elements. (Language)
