Colon Cancer Risk In Youth: Colon cancer is increasing rapidly among youth. Also called intestinal cancer or colorectal cancer. This is a type of cancer that affects the large intestine (colon) and rectum. This happens when abnormal cells in the large intestine grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor. This tumor can invade surrounding tissues and spread to other parts of the body. It may even cost you your life. This is being seen more in younger people. Its risk is increasing due to some habits like smoking.
TOI quoted a study by Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI) as saying that colon cancer is increasing among youth in the age group of 31-40 years. However, in the past, people over the age of 50 were at higher risk of colon cancer.
How does colon cancer occur?
Surgical Oncology (The Oncology Centre) at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram Dr. Vinay, Director of Samuel Gaikwad said that colon cancer is spreading rapidly due to drugs. When asked about the link between alcohol and colon cancer, he said that alcohol goes directly into the intestines and comes in direct contact. Alcohol breaks down into harmful substances that can damage the DNA in your cells, increasing your chances of getting cancer. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption can cause inflammation in the intestine which is another risk factor for bowel cancer.
Bring this change in your lifestyle
To reduce the risk of colon cancer, it is important to make changes in lifestyle. For this you will have to eat different types of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. At the same time, drinking alcohol will have to be reduced and smoking will have to be stopped. Apart from this, you have to do regular exercise and maintain a healthy weight. Choose fruits, vegetables and whole grains for vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants.
