Kolkata. Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Friday dismissed reports that he had resigned from the post of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president. He claimed that as per the Congress constitution, after the election of party national president Mallikarjun Kharge, the presidents of all state units have become temporary chiefs.
Choudhary said, ‘I am the temporary president of the state unit of Congress. Since the day Mallikarjun Kharge became the national president of Congress, there has not been a president in any other state of India.’ He said that it is surprising that the media is fabricating stories that he has resigned.
According to the organisational structure of the Congress, when the national president changes, he appoints new presidents of the regional units. Kharge became the Congress president in 2022, but keeping in mind the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party did not change the president in any state.
Chowdhary, a five-time Lok Sabha member of the party from Baharampur constituency in Murshidabad district, was defeated this time by Trinamool Congress candidate and former Indian cricket team member Yusuf Pathan. Chowdhary’s differences with the party high command on the issue of Congress’s relations with Trinamool have been coming to the fore for a long time.
Known for his staunch anti-Trinamool Congress stance, Choudhary has always been vocal about his views on the electoral pact with the CPI(M)-led Left Front. In fact, his differences with Kharge also surfaced in the midst of the Lok Sabha elections. After his resignation announcement, speculations about his successor had started.
