What is Kidneys: Often you must have heard that someone’s kidney has failed, someone is undergoing dialysis and someone’s kidney is bad. But do you know what a kidney is? Kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that hang in the rib cavity of the body. These remain attached to both your spines. The main function of the kidney is to filter the good things from one cup of blood every minute and expel the bad things through urine. It passes through the urinary bladder and goes out of the body through two thin tubes.
Why are kidneys important?
American Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases According to this, your kidneys mainly remove dirt i.e. waste materials and excess fluid from the body. Along with this, kidney also keeps water, salt, sodium, calcium, phosphorus and potassium balanced in the body. That means it balances things when they are more or less. If it is not balanced then our nervous system will not function. Moreover, in the absence of balance of these things, our muscles and other tissues will not function and then we will not be able to even lift our hands. Along with this, kidney controls blood pressure and also helps in producing red blood cells. Kidneys are also responsible for strengthening your bones. In this way it can be understood how important the kidney is for us.

How do kidneys work?
Kidney is such a filter which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. It contains millions of filtering units or filters which are called nephrons. There are filters in these nephrons which are called glomerulus and tubule. The glomerulus filters the blood and the tubule returns essential substances to the blood and removes waste materials from the body. Blood passes through every nephron in the kidney. Through the glomerulus, molecules, waste material and fluid, which contains a lot of water, pass through the tubules. Big molecules like proteins, blood cells etc. get stuck in the blood vessels.
how urine is made
Blood passes through the kidneys several times a day. In a day, the kidneys filter about 150 quarts i.e. 946 millimeters (slightly less than one liter) of blood. Most of the water and other substances in the body are filtered in the glomeruli and return to the blood through tubules. Only 1 to 2 quarts of these fluids can be converted into urine. Less urine is produced in children. The amount of urine is determined by age.
