What is round robin format?
The ICC ODI World Cup has been played twice in the round robin format so far. All the teams play each other in the league stage in a round robin format. In such a situation, if there are total 10 teams, then all the teams will play 9-9 matches in the league stage. Apart from this, each team gets two points each for winning the match while one each is distributed in case of draw or tie or cancellation of the match.
At the same time, the top four teams in the points table reach the semi-finals. The first semi-final match is played between the first and fourth placed team in the points table. And the second semi-final match is between the second and third place teams.
India’s performance in the round robin
The 1992 and 2019 World Cups were played in the round robin format. In the 1992 World Cup, the condition of Team India was very bad and could not even reach the semi-finals. At the same time, in the 2019 World Cup, India was defeated by New Zealand in the semi-finals.
Although the 2023 World Cup is to be played in India, Team India has the strongest claim on home soil. Team India became the champion in the last World Cup played in 2011, which was organized in India itself.
