After the brutal rape and murder of a lady doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, doctors across the country have gone on strike. Not just Delhi, but resident doctors from more than a dozen states are adamant on their demands for justice and due to this, OPD services, operation theatres and elective services in hospitals have come to a standstill. The doctors’ demands for security and justice are justified but the patients are bearing the brunt of it. Due to this strike, more than 50% of the patients in more than 10 major hospitals of Delhi have had to return without treatment.

Infection after delivery, waiting for operation…
Noman, who reached Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital with his sister-in-law from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, said that his sister-in-law gave birth to a daughter 10 days ago. After the caesarean delivery, something suddenly happened and the mother got an infection. After not getting treatment till Moradabad, he brought the patient to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Sunday. Bhabhi is on oxygen support, Bhabhi’s operation was to be done on Monday but due to the doctors’ strike, it was said that there is no surgeon right now. Therefore, the operation did not take place on Monday. Due to the doctors’ strike and protest, the surgery could not be done on Tuesday as well. However, after a lot of pleading, tests are being done. Let’s see when the surgery takes place.

54-year-old Nariman, a resident of Nandnagari, who came to AIIMS New Delhi complaining of stomach pain, said that even after getting treatment in the nearby government hospital for two days, when there was no relief, he came to AIIMS for treatment. However, he could not get an OPD token and on top of that there was a strike in the OPD, so he went to the emergency but there was already a crowd of patients there. He waited for 4 and a half hours groaning in pain but his turn did not come. The pain was severe so he had to go to a private hospital from there.

I had a gall bladder operation but it didn’t happen.
44-year-old Janaki Devi, who returned from RML Hospital, said that she had got a date for an operation to remove her gall bladder due to stone and was to be admitted on 13th August but after reaching the hospital she came to know that the operation will not take place. She was told to take a new date as there is a strike going on in the hospital. Now the operation has been postponed for one or two months again. Apart from the disease, she is worried and even more so due to frequent visits to the hospital.

RDA RML General Secretary Dr. Adil Amin said that the doctors’ strike has been going on since August 12. However, all emergency services are running in the hospital. Some pre-scheduled surgeries, which are not necessary immediately, have also been postponed. There are no senior residents and junior residents in the OPD but professors and consultants are present in the OPD. While the emergency operation theater is running and people are also being treated. Apart from this, pathology etc. services are also running.
Patients are getting upset, asking for help
Social jurist Ashok Agarwal said that many patients are facing problems due to the doctors’ strike. Not only OPD patients but also those who have been waiting for surgery for a long time are returning from hospitals in frustration. Many people have also appealed to government hospitals for help.
