New Delhi. Journalism is a boon and Hindi is called the first phase of journalism. Along with this Hindi is also our mother tongue. At present, Hindi journalism has destroyed the dominance of English journalism. Although, earlier English journalism was dominant in the country and abroad, but today the flag of Hindi language is waving. An English newspaper began to be published in the year 1780, 46 years before the publication of the Hindi newspaper Udant Martand.
Why is Hindi Journalism Day celebrated?,
May 30 is celebrated as ‘Hindi Journalism’. The first Hindi language newspaper was ‘Udant Martand’, which means news-sun. However, due to financial problems, only 79 issues could be published. It is said to be a Hindi language newspaper but it was published in a mixed form of Braj and Khari Boli. Hindi Journalism Day is celebrated every year on 30th May. Actually, the reason for celebrating it is that on this day in the year 1826, the first Hindi language newspaper ‘Udant Martand’ started being published. It was published from the then city of Calcutta, and it was started by Pandit Jugal Kishore.
When did Udant Martand close?
500 copies of the first issue of Udant Martand were printed, however, this newspaper did not get much readership at that time. Being a Hindi newspaper, its readership in Calcutta was negligible, so it had to be sent to other states by post. However, mailing was a very expensive deal at that time. Actually, Jugal Kishore requested the British government for concession in postal rates several times, but no solution was found and due to financial constraints, Udant Martand could not be printed for long and on 4 December 1826 this newspaper was closed.
