The tragic incident happened on 15 August
India got independence on 15 August 1947. Every year on this day, the whole country is immersed in the celebration of independence. However, if we look at the history of 15 August, this day is also remembered for a painful incident. On Independence Day, a part of the country suffered a devastating earthquake, which took the lives of about 20 to 30 thousand people. Actually, on 15 August 1950, the completion of three years of independence was being celebrated across the country. At the same time, a devastating earthquake struck India’s northeastern state of Assam.
There was devastation in Assam and Tibet
The earthquake tremors were felt at 7:39 pm Indian time. The epicenter of this 8.7 magnitude earthquake was located in the Mishmi Hills. At that time, it was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded on land. This earthquake caused devastation in both Assam (India) and Tibet. According to a report, more than 4,800 people were killed in the devastating earthquake. More than 1,500 deaths were recorded in Assam alone, while 3,300 deaths were recorded in Tibet.
The number of people who died was 20-30 thousand
Media reports claimed that the death toll was around 20 to 30 thousand. However, these figures were not confirmed by the government. It is said that the earthquake in Assam and Tibet was so dangerous that houses and buildings were razed to the ground. Not only this, it had a great impact on mountains and rivers. This devastating earthquake completely disturbed the balance of nature. A major reason for this loss was that the earthquake was located just south of the McMahon Line between India and Tibet. Because of this, both regions suffered a lot.
The sixth largest earthquake of the 20th century
The Assam-Tibet earthquake is said to be the sixth largest earthquake of the 20th century. According to media reports, 70 villages located in the Abor hills were destroyed due to the landslide. Not only this, the landslide affected the tributaries of the Brahmaputra. In terms of loss of property, this earthquake in Assam was more dangerous than the earthquake of 1897. After the earthquake, due to the rising rivers, floods also occurred and sand, soil, trees and all kinds of debris started falling down from the hills. Due to this earthquake, Assam had to face problems for a long time. (IANS)
