Angered by the postponement of a proposed marriage in Karnataka’s Kodagu district, a youth attacked and killed a 16-year-old girl with a sharp weapon. Police said that the marriage of both of them was postponed as the girl was a minor. Police said that after the marriage was postponed, 32-year-old Prakash entered the girl Meena’s house. Police said the young man attacked the girl’s father and mother and beheaded the girl and took the head with him.
Police suddenly reached minor girl’s house
The incident took place in Surlabbi village. According to the police, the girl was engaged to Prakash on Thursday, but someone informed the child helpline number, after which Child Welfare Department officials reached the house of minor girl Meena and explained to both the families. According to the police, the officials explained to both the families that if they went ahead with the marriage, the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and the Child Marriage Act would be applicable. According to the police, both the families agreed that Meena would be married to Prakash only after she turns 18. After this the officer and the groom’s family left from there.
Victim’s mother and father admitted to hospital
However, around 5.30 pm on Thursday, Prakash entered Meena’s house, kicked her father and attacked her mother with a sharp weapon, Superintendent of Police (Kodagu) Ramarajan said. He told that Prakash also dragged the girl outside for about 100 meters and attacked her with a sharp weapon, beheaded her and ran away from there taking the head with him. He said the victim’s mother and father have been admitted to the hospital and efforts are on to nab the accused.
Police said that a case has been registered against the accused under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. Police said the victim had three sisters and two brothers and was the youngest. (with language inputs)
