Two dark nights. The first one was filled with shame. The second one was filled with anger. The first night, on the intervening night of 8-9 August, the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Radha Govindkar Medical College (RG Kar Medical College) in Kolkata shook the country. The second night, on the intervening night of 14-15 August, when women from all over the country protested on the streets against this incident. Working women from AIIMS, IIT, IIM, RML and many big institutions took out candle marches and raised slogans. But, after outside protesters started mingling in this protest and vandalizing, the police started acting strict.
Women from across the country came out on the streets on Wednesday night to express their grief and pain over this heinous rape that happened in the hospital. This protest that started with ‘Women, reclaim the night’ at 11:55 pm on 14th August, took the form of ‘For women’s independence on the midnight of independence’ as soon as the night of 15th August arrived. Not only women, but men also participated in this protest with placards and banners in their hands. Women on the streets were raising slogans of ‘For women’s independence on the midnight of independence’.
Candle march and protest against the rape and murder of a female doctor….
The women participating in this protest in Kolkata and many other parts of the country kept demanding security for themselves and their daughters. It is being said that more such peaceful protests will be held in which other medical colleges including AIIMS of New Delhi can also be involved. Doctors say that the demand of the protest is strong and very clear – no security, no duty. They are saying that the trainees of the medical college have vowed not to go back to work until they get justice.

Protesters entered the candle march, police fired tear gas…
However, later many more protesters joined the protest and the demonstration took a violent turn. A trainee doctor told ANI – We had to leave here for a protest march at 11 pm. But there was a group of people outside the campus, they were shouting slogans – ‘We want justice’, but they were not moving forward and suddenly the crowd got angry.. They started trying to enter inside.. Suddenly, they came and started vandalizing… We had already told our female team to leave and as soon as they went.. the crowd broke the barricade and entered inside and we had to run to save our lives… Even though we are doing everything peacefully, they came from outside and started doing all this.
