New Delhi. Britain has indirectly refused to grant asylum to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled from Bangladesh. In such a situation, the question is now being raised whether she will stay in India because Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said in a statement on Tuesday that Sheikh Hasina is currently present at the Hindon airbase, but did not give any indication as to when she will leave India.
There were speculations about Sheikh Hasina, who fled from Bangladesh and reached India, that she could leave for London at any time, but now it does not seem possible. In fact, she is not expected to get political asylum from Britain because UK immigration rules do not have a provision for travel to grant asylum or temporary asylum to anyone.
According to the UK immigration policy, anyone should first seek asylum in a safe country where he reaches. If we understand the UK immigration policy, then in the case of Sheikh Hasina, the place of asylum should be India. Sources said that Awami League leader Hasina had planned to go to London via India and her associates had informed the Indian authorities about this before reaching Hindon.
Hasina, who landed at the Hindon airbase on Monday hours after resigning as prime minister, was taken to an undisclosed location and kept under tight security. Sources said Hasina was scheduled to leave India for London but is now considering other options as the UK government has indicated that she may not get legal protection in the UK against any potential investigation.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said in a statement in London on Monday that Bangladesh has seen unprecedented levels of violence and tragic loss of life and property over the past few weeks and the country’s people “deserve a full and independent UN-led investigation into the events.”
