Insulin & Type 2 Diabetes: To control diabetes, apart from proper diet and exercise, some medicines have to be taken. These medicines help in controlling blood sugar level. However, some diabetes patients take insulin doses to control sugar. It is often believed that only type 1 diabetes patients need insulin, while type 2 diabetes patients do not need insulin. However, experts believe that type 2 diabetes patients may also need insulin.
Dr Sonia Rawat, Director, Preventive Health Department, Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi, told AnyTV There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. In people with type 1 diabetes, insulin production stops in their bodies or insulin is produced in very small amounts. Due to this, such patients have to take insulin daily to control blood sugar. Whereas in patients with type 2 diabetes, insulin is produced in their bodies, but due to resistance, it is not able to work properly. For this, oral tablets are usually given. However, in many cases, such patients also have to be given insulin.
Dr Rawat said that type 2 diabetes patients are given medicines to control blood sugar, but these medicines start to be ineffective on many patients and their sugar level starts becoming uncontrolled. In such a condition, type 2 diabetes patients also need to be given insulin. Patients whose sugar level is uncontrolled are also advised to take insulin. However, doctors decide the dose and duration of insulin according to the condition of such patients. According to an estimate, about 30% of type 2 diabetes patients need insulin.
According to experts, if the blood sugar of diabetes patients is not under control, then it starts causing nerve damage in the body. This condition is called diabetic neuropathy. The nerves of the body parts of such patients start getting damaged and complications start arising. Most of the diabetes patients are at risk of diabetic neuropathy and to avoid this, people should take medicines and insulin doses on time. Along with this, sugar level should be monitored daily and one should get tested by consulting a doctor from time to time.
