Higher risk factors for diabetes: According to the International Diabetes Federation, 537 million people across the world have diabetes. But China and India are the worst affected by it. While 140 million people in China are diabetic, about 100 million people in India have become victims of diabetes. The scary truth is that diabetes is making people its victims so fast that by 2030, one in every four adults will be affected by it. The worrying thing is that India is already being called the Diabetes Capital of the World. Most people are affected by diabetes as soon as they become adults. For this, it is important for everyone to know who all are affected by it.
do you have diabetes
Diabetologist in Max Healthcare Gurgaon Dr. Paras Aggarwal It is said that diabetes is a condition in which the amount of sugar or glucose in the blood increases. This happens when there is a problem in the beta cells of the pancreas and due to this the insulin hormone is not produced in sufficient quantity or the insulin hormone is produced but it does not work properly. Actually, glucose is formed from the carbohydrates present in the food we eat. Insulin digests this glucose and converts it into energy. But when it is not digested, it keeps floating in the blood which gradually starts affecting many organs like kidney, heart, liver, eyes. Therefore it becomes dangerous. Once diabetes occurs, it becomes very difficult to get rid of it.
Who all are in its ambit
Dr. Paras Agarwal says that the risk of diabetes depends on many factors. There is not one but many reasons for this. According to the general statistics, Chinese and South Asian people are more prone to it. However, people who have a very sedentary lifestyle, i.e. they always sit, do not do any physical work, move less, do not exercise, are more prone to diabetes. Apart from all this, people who smoke or consume alcohol in large quantities are also at a higher risk of diabetes. At the same time, people with some mental conditions such as stress, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder etc. are also at risk. A woman who has polycystic ovary syndrome is also at a higher risk of diabetes. Heart attack and stroke also increase the risk of diabetes. Dr. Paras Aggarwal He said that all these factors can be responsible for diabetes.
Are men more at risk?
Dr. Paras Aggarwal He said that in earlier times, most of the men used to go out to work. They had the responsibility of running the family while women used to stay at home and do household chores. Men used to live a relaxed life due to going out while women used to do some work at home. At the same time, men used to be stressed about running the family. Due to all these reasons, the risk of diabetes was higher in men in the past but it is not so in today’s times. Today, both men and women have equal responsibility of the family and both have equal stress. Both men and women also smoke and consume alcohol. In such a situation, it is not completely true to say that the risk of diabetes is higher in men. People who have a relaxed lifestyle, consume more cigarettes and alcohol, will also have a higher risk of diabetes.
