Shillong. For the first time in Meghalaya, a woman IPS has been given command of the police. Senior IPS officer Idashisha Nongrang has been made the DGP of Meghalaya. She will replace DGP LR Bishnoi, who is retiring on May 19. Idashisha Nongrang is currently the DG of Civil Defense and Home Guards. She has also been the SP of East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya.
The Meghalaya Security Commission, headed by Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, selected Idashisha as the state’s DGP. Apart from them, UPSC had also proposed the names of RP Meena and Deepak Kumar for DGP. Two other IPS officers GP Singh and Harmeet Singh had distanced themselves from the race to become DGP of Meghalaya. CM Conrad Sangma has congratulated Idashisha Nongrang on being elected DGP. He said that Idashisha created history by breaking the barriers and it is a proud moment for all of us. Idashisha Nongrang is a 1992 batch IPS officer. He belongs to the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya. Idashisha has also previously served as the acting DGP of Meghalaya. His service period was greatly appreciated.
Idashisha Nongrang is recognized as an officer who strictly follows the law and works in the public interest. In the history of Meghalaya, there have been many big officers from the three major tribes Khasi, Garo and Jaintia, but for the first time a tribal woman has got the privilege of becoming the DGP of the state. The appointment of Idashisha Nongrang has also received approval from the Election Commission. The reason for this is that Lok Sabha elections are going on and the Model Code of Conduct is in place. For this reason, important policy decisions cannot be taken without the approval of the Election Commission.
