The government has announced the new chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). 1983 batch IAS officer Preeti Sudan has been made the new chairman. Her appointment will be effective from August 1, 2024. This post had become vacant after the resignation of former UPSC chairman Manoj Soni during the trainee IAS Pooja Khedkar controversy. He resigned before the end of his tenure. Manoj Soni resigned from his post citing personal reasons.
Who is Preeti Sudan?
Preeti Sudan has been a former health secretary. She has been a member of UPSC since 2022. Preeti is a retired IAS officer of the 1983 batch of Andhra Pradesh cadre. Her tenure as Union Health Secretary ended in July 2020. Apart from working in the Ministry of Women and Child Development, she has also worked in the Ministry of Defense. She was in charge of finance, planning, disaster management, tourism and agriculture in her cadre state Andhra Pradesh. Preeti Sudan has also worked as a consultant for the World Bank. According to the information, Preeti Sudan contributed to the creation of the National Medical Commission, Allied Health Professionals Commission and laws related to the ban on e-cigarettes, apart from starting two major flagship programs in the country – ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ and ‘Ayushman Bharat’.
Pooja Khedkar controversy
Let us tell you that the controversy is still going on regarding the trainee IAS Pooja Khedkar case. Many claims including Pooja’s documents have been found to be fake. Not only this, UPSC has also registered an FIR against trainee IAS Pooja. UPSC investigation has revealed that Pooja Khedkar used fake identity. She had appeared for the exam using fake identity by changing her name, her parents’ name, her photo, signature, email ID, mobile number and address. The commission also issued a show cause notice to cancel her candidature for the Civil Services Examination-2022 and debar her from future examinations or selection.
