Omicron’s new look is a cause for concern
“The virus is evolving and there are many sub-strains at Omicron that we are tracking,” Maria Van Kerkhove, the COVID-19 technical chief at the WHO, said at a briefing on Thursday. Its BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2 and BA.3 are new variants. It’s quite unbelievable how Omicron overtook Delta, causing worldwide concern. Its video has also been posted by WHO on Twitter.
WHO said, most of the sequences are from this sub-variant BA.1. We are seeing a rise in BA.2 cases. In a tweet accompanying the video, the WHO said that around 75,000 people died of COVID-19 last week. The WHO official said that BA.2 is more contagious than other viruses.
BA.2 More Deadly
Kerkhov said there is no evidence that BA.2 is more lethal than BA.1, but we are monitoring. He said Omicron is not lighter but less dangerous than Delta. We are still seeing a large number of deaths in Omicron’s cases. It’s not the common cold, it’s not influenza. We just have to be really careful.
The WHO said that about 75,000 people died of COVID-19 last week. According to the WHO, BA.2 now accounts for one in five new Omicron cases reported worldwide. In a briefing on Tuesday, the WHO said that a new wave of infections from the Omicron variant of the coronavirus is moving east of Europe. Urged officials to improve vaccination and other measures.
