Many medicines contain alkaloids such as codeine and caffeine, terpenes and many other bitter chemicals. These chemicals give bitter taste to medicines and affect various parts of the body. Many medicines are made from plant compounds and many medicines are made from chemicals made in industries. This is the reason why medicines are bitter.

According to Dr. Rakesh Gupta, sugar is added to some medicines to make them taste better. Many medicines are coated with sugar, which makes these tablets taste sweet. This is called sugar coating. However, most medicines do not have this coating and due to this the taste remains bitter. The metabolism of bitter compounds present within the medicine also affects its taste. Natural herbal medicines are also often bitter because they contain natural compounds, which taste bitter.

Health experts say that medicines which are extremely bitter are made in the form of capsules. The upper layer of the capsule is made of soft gelatin and this layer dissolves inside the stomach. Because of this, people can easily consume even the bitterest medicines. This helps the body to receive the necessary compounds and the health starts improving. If you are unable to take bitter medicines, you can mix them with honey and consume them. In earlier times, many medicines were given mixed with honey so that people could take them easily.
