Why did CJI Chandrachud remember Munnabhai MBBS? What did he say on the NEET uproar?

Chandigarh. Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Saturday cited a scene from the famous film ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ and stressed the need for young doctors to have empathy and compassion towards their patients. CJI Chandrachud said that the ultimate aim of treatment is to uplift humanity. Chief Justice Chandrachud also said that India is one of the countries ahead in innovation. Yet its benefits are limited to very few people. He appealed to the doctors to make the developments in the field of health accessible to all.

Addressing a gathering of young doctors at the 37th convocation of PGIMER, CJI Chandrachud highlighted that PGIMER has been the cornerstone of many innovations in the healthcare sector in India, standing as a symbol of excellence for the last 62 years. He said, ‘Today, as you graduate, you are standing on the shoulders of giants who have been at the forefront of the development of medical science.’ He said that both the medical and legal professions share a common goal and that is to enhance the well-being of people and communities through dedicated service.

‘Munnabhai MBBS’s ‘magic hug’ is beneficial
CJI Chandrachud recalled a scene from Sanjay Dutt’s film ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ to present the need for compassion and empathy among doctors. He said that instead of relying on medical jargon, ‘Munnabhai’ in the film gave a warm and comforting hug to a young patient. Which he called ‘Jaadu Ki Jhappi’ because the patient was very unhappy with a method of treatment. The CJI said that this act of kindness was full of genuine affection and reassurance, which was in contrast to the cold atmosphere of treatment in a hospital.

‘Just like a hospital, even in the court…’, CJI accepted the lack of infrastructure, said- situation is bad at the district level

Ethics plays a big role in admission to medical colleges
CJI Chandrachud said that the patient’s anxiety was relieved after the character ‘Munnabhai’ played by Sanjay Dutt hugged him. He said that this scene highlights an important point – the power of empathy and the feeling of personal attachment. He said that all of us in both medical and legal fields should remember that our ultimate goal is to serve and uplift humanity. CJI Chandrachud also cited the recent decision on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). He said that ethics plays a big role in getting admission in medical colleges.
