New Delhi: Concerns are being raised continuously over some products of Indian spice manufacturers MDH and Everest. Meanwhile, concerns over salmonella contamination have led to an increase in refusal rates for spice-related shipments exported by Mahashiyan Di Hatti (MDH) Pvt Ltd to the United States.
According to the Indian Express report, in the last six months, US customs officials rejected 31% of MDH’s spice shipments, compared to 15% last year. The increase in denial rates over Salmonella contamination comes at a time when both Singapore and Hong Kong suspended the sale of some items from MDH and Everest Food Products Pte Ltd after alleged carcinogenic pesticides were found in spice blends.

A Reuters report suggests that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is gathering information on MDH and Everest products. “The FDA is aware of the reports and is gathering additional information about the situation,” an FDA spokesperson told Reuters on Friday. Following the steps of Hong Kong and Singapore, two of the most popular spice brands in India are also under the scrutiny of the Indian regulator for quality standards.
The Spices Board, the industry regulator in India, has started inspecting the facilities of spice makers MDH and Everest for compliance with quality standards after reports of cancer-causing pesticides in some of their products emerged. The board said on Wednesday that it had sought data on MDH and Everest exports from the relevant authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore and was working with the companies to find the “root cause” of the issue.
