Epilepsy is one of the most common diseases, which affects more than 5 crore people worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), most cases of epilepsy are found in low-income countries and millions of people in India are suffering from this disease.
According to an estimate, if 70% of people suffering from epilepsy get proper treatment, they can recover from epileptic seizures. Physiologist Dr. Firdos Jahan says that there can be many reasons for epileptic seizures. Such as not having a normal delivery at the time of birth or any kind of infection in the child’s brain, head injury, high fever can also cause these seizures. Apart from this, epileptic seizures can also occur due to lack of glucose in the body.
This disease is also genetic
Dr. Firdos Jahan said that if someone in the family has seizures, then there is a high possibility that children may have seizures due to their genes. So instead of ignoring this disease, we should consult a doctor immediately. CT scan and ECG tests are done to diagnose the disease.
How can epilepsy be treated?
Dr. Firdos Jahan said that as soon as you get epilepsy, you need to take medicines from time to time. The medicines given by the doctor for this disease last for a long time. Suppose if the last attack has occurred today, then also the medicine for it continues for 3 years after that.
These things should be done during an attack
Dr. Firdos Jahan said that if someone is having an epileptic attack, then instead of panicking, take him to the doctor immediately. During an attack, the patient should never be held tightly. Because during fear, the body becomes stiff. Due to which the chances of bone breakage increase. The patient is never given water during an attack.
He told that during an attack, the patient should be immediately made to lie down with the support of a pillow. Usually this attack lasts for 1 to 2 minutes. That is why instead of getting nervous during this attack, these things should be done with the patient. This will give relief to the patient. Although there is no danger to life in an epileptic attack. But if we do not take these precautions, then the patient’s life can be in danger.
