Budapest (Hungary): Even though Ukraine has been fighting a war against Russia for more than 2 years with courage, the European support it is receiving has started to decrease. Hungary also wants to keep itself away from the NATO campaign supporting Ukraine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday that Hungary would like to stay out of any operation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) aimed at supporting Ukraine. He also said that the military alliance (NATO) and the European Union are moving towards a more direct conflict with Russia.
Orban told the state radio service that Hungary opposes a plan being considered by NATO to provide Ukraine with more reliable military support against a full-scale attack by Moscow in the coming years. NATO is pursuing the plan as better-armed Russian troops have taken control of the battlefield. “We do not agree to this, nor do we want to be involved in providing financial support or armed support (to Ukraine), even within the NATO framework,” Orban said. Orban said Hungary has taken a stance of not joining any potential NATO operation in support of Kiev.
Hungary will not take part in NATO action
The Hungarian PM said, “We have to redefine our position within the military alliance, and our lawyers and officials are working on it. How can Hungary exist as a NATO member without taking part in NATO actions outside its territory.” Orban, considered Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest partner in the EU, stressed NATO’s role as a defensive alliance. He said he does not agree with the concerns of some countries in Central and Eastern Europe that Russian forces will not end their aggression in Ukraine even if they win. (AP)
