Cancer rise in young Indians: According to the National Center for Disease Information and Research Center, more than 14 lakh cancer patients were found in India in 2022. The worrying thing is that in the next one or two years, 100.4 people per lakh people in India will be affected by cancer in some way or the other. What is even more unfortunate is that cancer is no longer only making the elderly its victims but is also rapidly catching the youth. Cases of breast cancer, throat cancer and prostate cancer have started increasing rapidly in people below the age of 50. Of all the people suffering from cancer in the whole world, 79 percent of the cases are occurring in people below 50 years of age. In the Indian Express news, senior gynecologist and oncologist Dr. Pakhi Agarwal says that the biggest reason for the development of cancer cells in someone’s body is the damage to the DNA present in the cells. The biggest contribution to this is a sedentary lifestyle. Sedentary lifestyle means that people do not move their body much, eat unhealthy food, remain stressed, smoke, drink alcohol, do not exercise. Apart from all this, the increasing obesity among Indians is responsible for 15 different types of cancer. At the same time, in some people, family genes are responsible for this. However, this happens only in 5.10 percent of cancer cases.
Reasons behind higher incidence of cancer in young people
According to Dr. Pakhi Agarwal, there are two reasons for cancer in youth. When cancer occurs in youth, its symptoms appear much later. Its symptoms are not visible for a few months or years. Secondly, the youth do not even get tests done from time to time due to which cancer remains undetected.
Diet is a double-edged sword
Processed food, fast food, junk food etc. have become a trend in the diet of the youth. These foods lose nutrients and also do not contain antioxidants. Secondly, the method of preparing food involves frying or processing the food too much for taste, due to which everything is removed from it. When there is no proper availability of nutrients and no antioxidants, free radicals will form in the cells of the body and this will damage the DNA in the cells and this will increase the risk of cancer cells developing.
