R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH)
R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) was established in 1886 to self-sufficiency in medical education and services in the colonial era. It was under the University of Calcutta from 1916 to 2003 and was affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. R. G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata is not only one of the premier institutions of modern India but also has a rich heritage. The brainchild of Dr. Radha Govind Kar, it was Asia’s first non-medical college.
Initially known as the Calcutta School of Medicine, it merged with the National College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bengal in 1904. It was later renamed Belgachia Medical College in 1916. It was later renamed Carmichael Medical College in 1916 in honour of Governor Thomas Gibson-Carmichael. It was given its current name on 12 May 1948 in honour of Dr Radha Govind Kar, who first conceived of it.
