Thiruvananthapuram. Will the name of the South Indian state of Kerala become history now? Actually this question has arisen because the Kerala government has decided to change the name of the state. The Kerala Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution, urging the Center to officially change the name of the state from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralaam’.
The state assembly has sent this proposal for the second time as the Union Home Ministry had suggested some technical changes after considering the earlier proposal. After this, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan again presented this proposal in the assembly on Monday. Vijayan wants the central government to change the name of the southern state from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralaam’ in all the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the country’s Constitution.
What is the reason for changing the name?
While introducing the resolution, the Chief Minister said the state was called ‘Keralaam’ in Malayalam and the demand for a unified Kerala for the Malayalam-speaking communities had been raised strongly since the time of the national freedom struggle.

Vijayan said, ‘But in the First Schedule of the Constitution, the name of our state is written as Kerala. This assembly requests the central government to take immediate steps to amend it as ‘Keralaam’ under Article-3 of the Constitution and change its name to ‘Keralaam’ in all the languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.’
The center had returned the previous proposal
This was the second time the state assembly passed a resolution demanding a change in the state’s name. Sources in the assembly secretariat said the house had unanimously passed a similar resolution in August last year and sent it to the Centre, but the Union Home Ministry had suggested some technical changes in it.

After introducing the proposal, the Chief Minister said that some changes were needed in the earlier proposal. The proposal was accepted by members of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). UDF MLA N Shamsuddin suggested some amendments to modify the structure of the proposal, which were later rejected by the government. After this, Assembly Speaker A N Shamsheer declared it passed unanimously.
