Dhaka: A top adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government has said that Sheikh Hasina, who resigned from the post of Prime Minister and went to India, will not have any effect on bilateral relations. Dhaka will always try to maintain good relations with New Delhi. According to the news agency ‘United News of Bangladesh’, interim government foreign affairs adviser Mohammad Tauhid Hussain made this comment when he was asked whether Hasina’s long stay in India would affect the bilateral relations between the two countries. Hussain said, “This is a hypothetical question. If a person lives in a country, why will relations with that country be affected? There is no reason for this.”

‘We will try to have better relations with India’

76-year-old Hasina resigned as prime minister last week and left the country for India after widespread protests against her government over the controversial job reservation system. Hussain said bilateral relations are based on mutual interests. He said both sides, Bangladesh and India, have their own interests and they will focus on those interests. Hussain said he will “always try to maintain good relations” with India.

‘Sought support from India’

Mohammad Tauhid Hussain briefed diplomats posted in Dhaka, including Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma, about the current situation in Bangladesh and sought their support. Hussain told the diplomats, “We believe that all our friends and partners in the international community will stand with the interim government and our people as we move towards building a new future for Bangladesh.”

It was said this before

Earlier, the interim government’s foreign affairs adviser Mohammad Tauhid Hussain had said that restoring law and order is the main priority of the interim government at this time, other tasks will also be done after the first goal is achieved. He also said that Bangladesh needs to maintain good relations with all countries. Without naming any country, Hussain had said, “We want to have good relations with everyone. We need to maintain balance in relations with big countries.” (Language)
