Nepal’s Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s visit to India is considered very important in the direction of improving bilateral relations. Actually, KP. Relations between the two countries had soured under the previous communist government led by Sharma Oli, and India, concerned over Oli’s more leaning towards China, was constantly trying to improve relations with Nepal. Deuba’s visit to India is being considered important in this direction.
Relations between India and Nepal have been historically and traditionally close, but in recent years there has been increasing Chinese interference. Especially during the tenure of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of the previous communist government, Nepal has had an anti-India stand. Sharma tried to strengthen relations with China, in which he was successful to a large extent. Not only this, the Kalapani border dispute was also blown up at the behest of China, while a mechanism is established between the two countries to resolve it. During this, China’s help to Nepal has also increased and this process continues.
Meanwhile, when the Foreign Minister of China recently reached Nepal after India, he has made many new agreements with Nepal, some of which can be troublesome for India. For example, an agreement is about adding rail connectivity between China and Nepal. One is about the power grid connectivity between the two countries.
China has also announced to increase the assistance given to Nepal from 13 billion Nepalese rupees to 15 billion. In view of all this, Deuba’s visit and its hidden message are important for India.
Foreign policy experts say that after the Nepali Congress came to power last year and Deuba became the PM, the anti-India stand has stopped and the contact vacuum created between the two countries has been restored. . Deuba is also working to deepen ties with India as before. Earlier in the year, he was also going to take part in the Bibrate Gujarat program but this program got postponed due to Corona.
However, this is the first visit of Nepal’s PM to India after four years. KP Sharma came to Oli in 2018. Although Deuba has become PM four times before and he came to India in all four terms.
The Kurtha (Janakpur) and Jayanagar (Bihar) railway lines are likely to be inaugurated during Deuba’s journey. This 35 km long rail link will connect the two countries. Similarly, agreement can also be reached on Raxaul-Kathmandu rail line. India had announced the construction of 135 health centers during the Nepal earthquake which is pending. There can be cooperation between the two countries on this too. Apart from this, there may be some other announcements from India regarding Nepal, in which there are issues like army, recruitment of Nepali youths in the army etc.
According to sources in the Ministry of External Affairs, when Deuba became PM in July 2021 and won the trust vote, Prime Minister Modi called him and congratulated him. After this, Modi also met him during the climate talks in Glasgow in November. Now on April 2, there will be a high-level meeting between the two Prime Ministers. Deuba will also visit Varanasi. Let us inform that Prime Minister Modi had gone to Nepal in 2018 to participate in the fourth meeting of BIMSTEC. This was also his state visit to Netal.
