New Delhi. There are many cases being heard in the Supreme Court today, but one of the biggest cases is about reconsideration of the unlimited powers of the ED. The Supreme Court is going to reconsider its decision in which the ED has been given unlimited powers under the Money Laundering Act. The ED has taken action against many politicians and other people due to this unlimited power given to itself. The bench of Justice Suryakant, Justice CT Ravikumar and Justice Ujjwal Bhuyan in the Supreme Court will reconsider the old decision this afternoon. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram had filed an application in this regard. Karti Chidambaram’s father P. Chidambaram is a former Union Minister.
In the Supreme Court, a separate bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice MM Sundaresh and Justice Bela Trivedi is separately hearing the petitions seeking reconsideration of Vijay Madanlal Chaudhary’s case and handing it over to a larger bench. At the same time, a bench headed by Justice Suryakant will hear Karti Chidambaram’s petition. A bench of Justice Khanna, Justice Sundaresh and Justice Bela Trivedi is hearing petitions challenging the validity of Section 50 and 63 of the Money Laundering Act. Under these sections of the PMLA Act, the ED has the power to summon witnesses, record their statements and even file a case against them for giving incorrect information.

Under the PMLA law, ED has been given so much power that it can raid anywhere, arrest anyone and confiscate property. ED has taken action against many people including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia on the basis of this power. If the Supreme Court reconsiders its decision and reduces the power of the investigating agency, then its far-reaching consequences can be seen. However, it is unlikely that the Supreme Court will give its decision after hearing on this matter today. The hearing in this case is likely to continue further in the court.
