Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh has brought a new bill to stop forced religious conversion.
The Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion (Amendment) Act, 2024, which provides for life imprisonment in cases of fraudulent or forced conversion, was passed by the state assembly on Tuesday, the second day of the monsoon session. The Yogi Adityanath-led state government has brought the ‘Love Jihad’ bill to curb forced conversions. We asked the public in an India TV poll whether this bill would be successful in stopping forced conversions, on which the public gave their opinion in large numbers. Most of the public believed that the bill is so stringent that it will definitely curb forced conversions.
What did the public say?
We had asked the question in the India TV poll, ‘Will the new ‘Love Jihad’ bill of Uttar Pradesh be successful in stopping forced religious conversion?’ For this, the public had 3 options – ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘can’t say’. The public voted heavily on this issue and out of a total of 12417, 85 percent people answered ‘yes’. At the same time, 10 percent people believed that the new ‘Love Jihad’ bill will not be successful in stopping forced religious conversion. Apart from this, there were 5 percent people who were not in a position to say anything on this issue.
Most people believe that after this bill, cases of forced conversion will decrease.
What is in this law?
In this amended Act, the law has been made stricter than before in cases of conversion by fraud or force, and a maximum punishment of life imprisonment has been provided. In the amended bill, a maximum punishment of life imprisonment has been provided to those guilty of converting a woman by deceit, marrying her illegally and harassing her. Earlier, a maximum punishment of 10 years imprisonment was provided in this. A provision of fine up to Rs 10 lakh has also been made in this.
