Woman’s Day 2022: Hari Om Goud. Morena. Millions of people lost their jobs during the Corona pandemic. People had become fascinated for business, in that dire situation Alpana Tomar of Goth village of Ambah in Morena district created a new success story. By doing the work of making brooms, Alpana gave employment to the women of the village besides herself. These women will now also give employment to the unemployed youth of the village.
Alpana Tomar’s relatives do labor and farming. When employment was not found during the Corona period, he started the work of making brooms by forming a group of women. Women did not have money for raw materials, then took a loan of one lakh rupees from the bank through Ajivika Mission. With this amount, the material for making flower broom and coconut broom was brought from Odisha. Many women liked the work of working from home and gradually 45 women of Goth village started doing broom making. The wage for making a broom was fixed at Rs. A woman can easily make more than 40 brooms in a day. That is, wages of four and a half to five thousand rupees started being received sitting at home in a month. Seeing this, 15 women of neighboring village Bareh have also started the work of making brooms. These women are making three to three and a half thousand brooms every month and supplying them in the market. Roshni Tomar tells that no machine is used for this work, there is no dependence on electricity. Whenever he is free from household chores, he does the work of making brooms. Anita Tomar, associated with the group, says that the chances of harm in this work are less. Because after making the broom, the stock can be kept for several days or months.
Our brooms are 50 percent cheaper and stronger than the market:
Alpana Tomar says that the demand for brooms is always there in the market. Our brooms are stronger and up to 50% cheaper than the branded ones. The flower broom of a branded company which comes in the market for 90 to 100 rupees, we are preparing the same broom for 40 rupees, which the shopkeepers are selling to the customers for 45 to 50 rupees. According to Alpana, after the women of the village, she will now give employment to a young and old man to make brooms, who are not getting any wages and are sitting unemployed at homes. Apart from this, the supply of brooms will be done through the youth in the markets, which is a difficult task for the women of the village.
Village elders working on involving men
Eight months back, when we planned to work, we thought that we should make such a thing, which is the need of every household, in which machines, electricity do not have to depend on it. After much thought, the idea of making a broom came to mind. The raw material was first procured from Odisha. We are also working to involve young and old men of the village in this.
