Wreckage of a Cambodian military helicopter that went missing more than two weeks ago

Phnom Penh: The wreckage of a Cambodian military helicopter that was missing for nearly 17 days was spotted on a mountain top on Monday. There were two pilots in the helicopter, the government and official news agency reported. A post on the Defense Ministry’s official Facebook page said that a search plane spotted the wreckage of the Chinese-made Z-9 helicopter in the densely forested Cardamom Mountains in the southwestern province of Pursat. The helicopter was on a training flight on July 12. There were two pilots on board.

Contact with Air Force Headquarters was lost after takeoff

Due to bad weather, the helicopter lost contact with the air force headquarters shortly after the flight. An intensive search for the missing helicopter was launched the next day. State news agency AKP reported that military personnel sent to the crash site found the body of a pilot inside the damaged helicopter.

Photos shared

State broadcaster TVK later said the body of the second pilot was seen about 200 meters away. A photo widely shared on social media on Monday showed a helicopter broken into several pieces and partially covered with leaves. However, the photo and its source could not be immediately confirmed. (AP)
