Lucknow. Not only in Uttar Pradesh, but for the first time in the politics of the country, the monk, who became a Chief Minister, not only completed his five-year term, but is going to take over the throne again. Yogi, who took the responsibility of the Gorakshapeeth as a saint, emerged as a warrior in politics and social field, and showed a sensitivity by serving the Vantangis and getting their rights.
He has won from Gorakhpur’s city assembly constituency by more than one lakh votes. He has also been the MP of Gorakhpur for five consecutive terms. He has been winning elections since 1998. In 2017 he became the Chief Minister. The 2022 election was fought on the face of Yogi. He fulfilled his role. Prove yourself once.
At the age of 22, he became a sanyasi (yogi) after being initiated into the Nathpanth. In this form, he became the successor of Brahmalin Mahant Avedyanath, the Peethadheeshwar of Gorakshapeeth, Gorakhpur, one of the main peeths of North India. Avedyanath was a well-accepted name in the Sant Samaj and Samaj.
Brahmalin Mahant Avadyanath also handed over his political legacy to his beloved disciple (Yogi). Thus in 1998 he became the youngest Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) at the age of 26. After this Yogi never looked back. The record of being elected from Gorakhpur parliamentary constituency for five consecutive times is also in the name of Yogi. When he was an MP, a prestigious magazine of the country considered him one of the most influential people in the country in its survey.
Yogi Adityanath was born on 5 June 1972, in a simple family in Panchur village of Pauri Garhwal (Uttarakhand). His father Anand Singh was a ranger in the World Forest Department. Inspired by the nationalist ideology since childhood, Yogi was associated with the Ram Mandir movement in the nineties. It was during the Ram temple movement that he came in contact with its hero Gorakshpeethadhishwar Mahant Avadyanath. The knowledge of Mahant ji and the knowledge received from him about the Nath sect impressed him so much that he decided to take his retirement after completing his graduation from Garhwal University.
In this sequence, he came to the Gorakhnath temple in 1993 and got engrossed in religion, spirituality and spiritual practice according to the tradition of Nath Panth. Seeing his spiritual practice and inherent talent, Mahant Avadyanath gave him initiation on 15 February 1994 as the successor of Gorakshapeeth. As the successor of Gorakshapeeth, he always expanded the cause of public welfare and social harmony of the Peeth.
After the death of Mahant Avadyanath, he became incumbent on 14 September 2014 as Gorakshapeethadhishvara (mahant). After this role, he is also the President of All India Barah Bhesh Panth Yogi Sabha from this date.
Senior journalist Girish Pandey, who has been keeping a close watch on the temple for nearly thirty decades, says that Yogi Adityanath has also inherited political responsibility from the Gorakshapeeth. His grandfather, Guru Brahmlin Mahant Digvijaynath has represented the Gorakhpur parliamentary constituency once. His mentor Brahmlin Mahant Avadyanath has been a four-time MP from Gorakhpur parliamentary constituency and five-time MLA from Maniram assembly constituency. It was only after winning the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha election in 1996 that Mahant Avadyanath had announced that Yogi would also handle the succession of his politics. After this, Yogi contested from Gorakhpur in the 1998 Lok Sabha elections and became the youngest (26 years) MP at that time in the twelfth Lok Sabha by winning. Since then, he has been one of the rare MPs to win parliamentary elections for five consecutive terms till 2014.
Pandey said that Yogi, who was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on March 19, 2017, has not only completed a splendid tenure amidst all the achievements but has also maintained an impeccable image in public life. During the five years, his own lifestyle was like that of a sanyasi. There has been no change in the simple and disciplined lifestyle. Perhaps he is the only Chief Minister of the state so far who has broken the myth of going to Noida by visiting every district of the state several times. Earlier, the Chief Minister did not go to Noida fearing the myth that going there leads to the loss of the CM’s chair.
Girish Pandey says that ‘Under the leadership of Yogi, Uttar Pradesh has changed its perception inside the country. Today UP is recognized as a safe state. Today, Uttar Pradesh is known as better law and order within the country and there is also a curiosity to know and take down the model here in different states.
