Analyst Joshua Berginagar wrote in a commentary on the website of the TV channel CNN that the Russian attack on Ukraine is the most violent manifestation of the change in the world’s geopolitical system after 9/11 (the terrorist attacks on the US on September 11, 2001). . For years after 9/11, Western leaders focused on dealing with enemies such as al-Qaeda and ISIS.
At that time the Kremlin (the Russian presidential office) was not seen as a threat as it was perceived in the past (in Soviet times). In the 2012 US presidential election, Barack Obama mocked his rival Mitt Romney for saying that Russia is still America’s number one geopolitical rival. Burginagar has said that the Russian attack on Ukraine has changed its face. Now Western countries have isolated Russian President Vladimir Putin to an extent never before.
According to experts, the second major change is that Europe has now become more united with the US. It has been described as an American achievement. According to these experts, till now there were differences in foreign policy among the countries of the European Union. These countries did not want to give control of their foreign countries to the EU. But the situation changed after the attack on Ukraine. Now the whole of Europe has become more unanimous on developing collective defence, security and foreign policy. European countries have now also accepted that if they want to arrange their own security, then they will have to spend on it. They cannot leave this responsibility to America.
A third change has taken place in the nature of the refugee problem. European countries till now had to deal with the problem of refugees coming from poor countries. But within ten days of the start of the Ukraine war, about one million people were displaced and left for European countries. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has said that I have worked on the refugee problem for almost 40 years, but I have rarely seen such a problem arise so fast before.
Apart from this, the fourth change is on the economic front. Due to the Ukraine crisis, the price of natural gas has risen sharply from Europe to America. Due to this, a new challenge has come in front of the countries already facing high inflation rate. Rating agency Moody’s has warned that the world economy, already affected by global supply chain disruptions and the COVID-19 pandemic, may now fall into chaos. Other analysts have also said that the whole world will have to pay the economic price of the Ukraine crisis and people everywhere will suffer because of this.
