Harare: Even the United Nations is shocked by the worst drought in Zimbabwe in 40 years. Dust is flying in the rivers and ponds here. Farms and barns have turned into desert. The crops have dried up. Due to this, people are in great danger of starvation and famine. In view of the circumstances, the United Nations has appealed to the entire world to provide humanitarian assistance to Zimbabwe. The UN humanitarian agency said on Thursday that Zimbabwe has been hit by its worst drought in four decades and almost half of the country’s population is in urgent need of drinking water and food.
The United Nations has appealed for $430 million in aid for Zimbabwe. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that out of the country’s population of 15 million, 76 lakh people need humanitarian assistance for livelihood and survival. Agency official Edward Matthew Callan said that we are appealing for immediate help to 31 lakh people of the most seriously affected districts.
El Nino became the cause of drought
It is being told that due to El Nino, there is drought in most parts of Southern Africa, due to which there is severe shortage of food and water for humans and animals. Zimbabwe is an agriculture-dependent country and was once an exporter of food, but is currently most affected by drought. The United Nations has appealed for help to Zimbabwe ranging from food aid to cash transfers and the construction of solar-powered boreholes that will provide drinking water to people and livestock.
