A new update has emerged regarding the Aadhaar card. The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has removed the Aadhaar card from the list of documents that could have been presented as evidence of the date of birth till now. The Retirement Fund and Pension Accounting Body EPFO has clarified in its circular that the base details will not be considered as evidence of the date of birth. The EPFO has issued a circular on 16 January to clarify that this step is being taken on the instructions of UIDAI, an organization issuing Aadhaar card.
EPFO has said this in its circular
The circular issued by EPFO on January 16 states that the base data of any person will no longer be considered valid as a proof of the date of birth. This step has been taken on the basis of a letter received from UIDAI. The EPFO further wrote in the circular that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has said in its letter that the use of Aadhaar should be removed from the list of documents to be given as proof of date of birth.
What is UIDAI issued the order?
In December, UIDAI informed the Aadhaar card to remove the Aadhaar card from the list of valid documents in the form of date of birth. In this circular issued on 22 December 2023, UIDAI said that the Aadhaar number can be used to verify the identity of a person. This is not a proof of date of birth. The UIDAI further said that the Aadhaar card has been removed from the list of documents given as proof of the date of birth.
Aadhar card is to prove a resident
UIDAI further stated in its circular that Aadhaar is a unique 12 -digit ID, which is issued to a resident after undergoing enrollment process by submitting his demographic and biometric information. Once a person gets an Aadhaar number, he can prove himself a resident through the methods given in the Aadhaar Act, 2016.
The date of birth in Aadhaar card is determined by UIDAI
UIDAI has also clarified the date of birth in the Aadhaar card in its circular. It states that the UIDAI records the date of birth claimed by any resident while enrollment or updating the Aadhaar card. This claim is based on documents provided by the resident. These documents are from the list of documents prescribed for the Aadhaar enrollment given on the UIDAI website.
