What was the reason why the sage was sad?
The supreme devotee of Lord Shiva was unhappy due to being a childless sage Mrkand. The creator did not include children in his fate. Markand thought that if Mahadev can change all the rules of the world, then why not please Bholenath and change this rule. Then the sage Mrkand started harsh penance. Bholenath knew the reason for the penance of Mrkand, so he did not appear immediately, but Bholebaba had to bow down in front of the devotee’s devotion. Mahadev was pleased. He said to the sage, I am giving you the boon of a son by changing the law of the law, but with this boon, there will be happiness and sorrow.
Such were the sons of the sage Mrkand Rishi
With the boon of Bholenath, Mrkand received a son named Markandeya. Astrologers told Mrkand that this is a young, quality child. Its age is only 12 years. The sage’s happiness turned into sorrow. Mrkand assured his wife that the child will be safe by the grace of God. Changing luck is an easy task for them.
Markandeya’s mother became worried
When Markandeya grew up, his father initiated him of Shiva Mantra. Markandeya’s mother was worried about the growing age of the child. He told Markandeya about his young age. Markandeya decided that for the happiness of the parents, he would ask Lord Shiva longer, who gave him life. Twelve years passed.
Markandeya composed Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
Markandeya composed Mahamrityunjaya Mantra to worship Lord Shiva and sat in the Shiva temple and started chanting it continuously.

When the time was over, the Yamdoot came to pick him up. When the Yamdoots saw that the child was worshiping Mahakal, he started waiting for a while. Markandeya had taken the fast of chanting continuously. They kept chanting without stopping. Yamdoots did not have the courage to touch Markandeya and they returned. He told Yamraj that he does not have the courage to reach the child. On this, Yamraj said that I will bring the son of Mrkand myself. Yamraj reached Markandeya. When the boy Markandeya saw Yamraj, he was loudly chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and clung to the Shivling. When Yamraj tried to take the child away from the Shivling, the temple started shaking with faster roar. Yamraj’s eyes were dazzled with bright light.
Mahakal appeared from Shivling
Mahakal himself appeared from Shivling. He warned Yamraj with a trident in his hand and asked how did you dare to pull my devotee absorbed in meditation ..? Yamraj Mahakal started trembling loudly. He said- Lord, I am your servant. You have given me the cruel task of taking life. God’s anger decreased and he said, ‘I am happy with the praise of my devotee and I have blessed him for a long life. You cannot take it. ‘ Yama said- Lord your order is supreme. I will not hurt those who recite Mahamrityunjaya composed by your devotee Markandeya. Markandeya ji caused longevity with the grace of Mahakal, so the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra composed by him also defeats the period.
