Covid-19 Virus: The havoc of the corona virus started in China in the year 2019, after which it gradually spread all over the world. The Covid pandemic killed millions of people, while billions of people became victims of infection. Covid is still wreaking havoc in many countries, but scientists have not been able to find out where this virus came from. Many experts had claimed that the corona virus spread from China’s Wuhan lab, but the controversy continued. Many countries including America had accused China of spreading the virus, while China kept denying it.
Now in a new study, scientists have made a big revelation about the corona virus. This research claims that the corona virus spread from Wuhan market in China in late 2019. In this study, scientists collected more than 800 samples from Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, China, where wild animals were suspected to be sold. These samples were not taken directly from animals or people after the market was closed in January 2020, but from the surfaces of stalls selling wild animals and drains. Based on this, researchers have said that the corona virus spread from here.
Florence Deber, co-author of the study published in the journal “Cell”, told AFP that she cannot say for sure whether the animals present in the market were infected or not. However, a biologist from France’s CNRS research agency said that our study confirms that there were wild animals in this market in late 2019. These included animals from species such as raccoon dogs and civets. These animals were in the south-west corner of the market, which is in the same area where the SARS-CoV-2 virus was detected. This is the cause of Covid-19.
Experts who conducted the research claim that these animals can catch the virus just like humans do. This has led to them being suspected as an intermediate host between humans and bats, from which SARS-CoV-2 is suspected to have originated. The presence of these animals in the Huanan market was previously disputed, although there was some photographic evidence and a 2021 study. According to the study, several parts of a stall tested positive for the Covid virus, including animal carts, a cage, a garbage cart, and a hair/feather removal machine.
The researchers said that these samples contained more DNA from wild mammalian species than human DNA. Mammal DNA was found in the Covid-positive samples, including palm civets, bamboo rats and raccoon dogs. These data indicate that either the animals present in the stalls spread SARS-CoV-2 or the virus may have reached there due to people initially infected with Covid-19. The research also confirms that the strain of Covid virus found in the market samples was genetically similar to the original strain of Covid.
This means that the virus originated in the market. James Wood, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Cambridge, says that this research has found very strong evidence for the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to the wild animal stalls in the Huanan seafood market. This research was necessary because little or nothing has been done to limit the trade of live wild animals. Loss of biodiversity or changes in land use are indeed potential causes for the origin of past and future epidemics.
