Mythology of Govardhan Puja
The festival of Govardhan Puja reminds us of the wonderful deeds of Lord Shri Krishna. In this puja, our gratitude is expressed especially for the blessings of Govardhan Parvat and the cow. Let’s read the Bhagwat story of Govardhan… According to the Govardhan Puja stories described in the scriptures, it was during the Dwapar era that once Devraj Indra became proud of his worship etc. At that time, Shri Krishna, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who was performing on earth in Dwapar Yuga, thought of breaking the ego of Indradev.
Shri Krishna asked a question to Yashoda Mayya
Once when all the Brijvasis were preparing dishes for Annakoot and preparing for the worship of Lord Indra, Kanha asked Mother Yashoda, “Maiya, for whose worship are you people preparing? Mother Yashoda said, Lalla, we are going to worship Devraj Indra. They provide rain so that our crops can grow. Lord Krishna said, Mother, we should worship Govardhan Mountain, because our cows graze there and Indra cannot be seen and he even gets angry if we do not worship him. Lord Shri Krishna told the people of Braj to worship Lord Indra. Instead of worshiping, asked to worship Govardhan Mountain. On this advice of Shri Krishna, all the people of Brij started worshiping Govardhan Mountain instead of worshiping Indra. When Indradev came to know about this, he considered it an insult and got angry and started raining heavily. All the people of Brij got scared due to this rain and they started blaming Lord Krishna and started asking him to suggest some solution to save them.
Shri Krishna raised Govardhan mountain
On this Lord Krishna asked all the people of Braj to gather near Govardhan Mountain. When all the people of Braj gathered near the Govardhan mountain, Shri Krishna tied his flute around his waist and lifted the Govardhan mountain on his little finger and gave shelter to all the Braj people along with their cows and calves under the Govardhan mountain. On this, Indra’s anger increased further and he made the rain more intense. To control this situation, Lord Krishna ordered Sudarshan Chakra to control the speed of rain by staying on top of the mountain. In this way Lord Krishna protected the people of Braj. Seeing all this, Indradev realized that Krishna is not an ordinary person. Then Indradev reached Brahma ji and told him his problem. Then Brahma Ji explained to Indra that Lord Krishna himself is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this, Indradev’s pride broke and he asked for forgiveness from Lord Krishna and decided to worship him. After this, Govardhan Puja started being celebrated on this day in the entire Braj world and Annakoot bhog was offered to Kanha.
