Dehradun: Farmers working in the fields face many problems in their eyes which they are careless about. This can sometimes even lead to loss of eyesight. While planting, harvesting or threshing the crop, straw or sharp grass or soil enters their eyes. After this, they rub it which has a bad effect on the cornea. Therefore, farmers should take some precautions while working in the field.
Dr. Himani Pal, an ophthalmologist at Doon Medical College Hospital in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, while giving information to Local 18, said that although all normal people should take special care of their eyes, but many factors have a bad effect on the eyes of farmers working in the fields, such as when they work in the field, mud or straw and garbage falls in their eyes.
Due to lack of information, they start rubbing their eyes, which puts them at risk of causing a hole in their cornea.
When something like this happens, farmers buy medicines from their nearest chemist without consulting a doctor. Seeing the redness in the eyes, the shopkeeper gives them eye steroids which instead of reducing the infection, increases it further and causes wrong damage to the eyes of the farmers.
Do this if pesticide falls in your eyes
Dr Himani Pal said that many times when farmers spray chemicals on their crops, it goes into their eyes, in such a case they should wash their eyes with clean water. If this happens, immediately go to your nearest ophthalmologist and get your eyes tested.
He said that farmers should wear white protective plastic goggles while working in the fields. Apart from this, if there is mud on your hands, do not put them on your eyes without washing your hands.
