Neurosurgeons removed the Brain Tumor without opening the skull: Whenever a doctor saves a patient’s life, he is no less than a God who gives life. But the doctors of the neurosurgical team of AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad have really done a miracle. The doctors of this hospital have removed a critical tumor from the brain of a 54-year-old woman without making any cut or opening the skull. This process is scientifically known as “endoscopic lateral transorbital approach”. In this process, doctors have found a way to reach some parts of the brain by making a small passage around the eye using a neuro-endoscope.
According to doctors, the 54-year-old female patient had complained of blurred vision and headache in the right eye for the past six months. The patient was treated as viral encephalitis but did not improve. When her condition did not improve, she approached AIG Hospital and during investigations, it was found that she was suffering from spheno-orbital cavernous meningioma (SOM). It is a mild tumor that forms in the areas where the sphenoid bone (which is located at the base of the skull, behind the eyes), the eye socket, and the cavernous sinus (which is a large vein at the base of the skull) meet.
Dr. Abhiram Chandra Gabbita, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, AIG Hospital said, ‘After many discussions with our neurosurgical unit and team of ophthalmologists, we found that we could use this new technology in the treatment of this patient. We are very satisfied and happy that we have successfully performed the operation and set a new example in neurosurgery.’
Dr. Subhodh Raju, Director of Neurosurgery, AIG Hospital, said, “Through the endoscopic approach, we can reach the tumor through a small incision. Since the brain is not directly touched or pressed during the operation, there is no physical impact on the brain. This results in less trauma to the surrounding tissues and a faster recovery process. The patient showed amazing improvement and was discharged from the hospital on the second day of the procedure.”
