The first Republic Parade was organized in the year 1950. The first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad hoisted the national flag on the occasion of the Indian Republic on 26 January 1950. The first Republic Parade was held on 26 January 1950 at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium. At that time this stadium was known as Irwin Amphitheater (Women’s Legal Rights).
You will be surprised to know that from the year 1950 to 1954, the Republic Parade was organized at four different places. This parade was held at Kingsway Camp, Red Fort and sometimes at Ramlila Maidan.
The first parade on Rajpath was held in the year 1955. At that time this route was known as Kingsway. Since then it is organized every year on 26 January on Rajpath i.e. Path of Duty. The President of India hoists the national flag on the special occasion of Republic Day. After hoisting the national flag, a 21-gun salute of the Indian Army is given. The chief guest of the first Republic Day parade was Indonesian President Sukarno.
