Jawai Dam, one of the largest dams of Rajasthan, is the lifeline of about 4900000 lakh people, Jawai Dam, built on Jawai River, a tributary of Luni River, the most famous in Rajasthan, works as a forest protector for its surrounding cities. Along with this, this dam is also famous all over the world for its amazing natural beauty and wildlife. Tourists can also enjoy watching the migratory birds coming from different parts of the world here. So today let us take you on a virtual tour of Jawai Dam, one of the most beautiful dams of the country.

This dam, located near Sumerpur city of Pali district of Rajasthan state of India, was built by Maharaja Umed Singh of Jodhpur. Jawai Dam is located in the most rugged and forested part of the Aravalli Hills in the Pali, Rajsamand and Udaipur districts of Rajasthan. The idea of building a dam on the Jawai River came in 1903 because its flood waters during the monsoon had caused huge damage in Pali and Jalore districts. It was finally given shape in 1946. The objective of this project was to create a reservoir by building a dam on the river, which could be used for water irrigation and hydropower generation. The construction work of this dam started on 12 May 1946, which was completed in the year 1957. The construction of this dam was started under the direction of English engineers Edgar and Ferguson, although the construction of this dam of Azadi was completed under the supervision of Motisingh.

It is the largest man-made dam in western Rajasthan, covering an area of about 13 square kilometers. With a capacity of 7887.5 million cubic feet, this dam caters to the irrigation needs of 102,315 acres of land. With a height of about 61.25 feet, Janwai Dam creates a catchment area of about 720 square kilometres. To complete the water supply of this dam spread over an area of about 500 square km, Sei and Kalibor feeder dams have also been built on it.

You can visit the dam anytime between October to March. During this period, the weather here is pleasant and comfortable as well. But if you want to enjoy your trip to the fullest then you should visit Pali in the cold i.e. winter season. Because in this season you can also see many types of migratory birds near the dam. Apart from this, this season is also a good time to visit other tourist places of the city.

Jawai Dam is one of the largest reservoirs in western Rajasthan and is famous for attracting an impressive range of migratory and non-migratory birds, including the sarus crane, a distinctive and iconic species of open wetlands. Other species include the Knob-billed Duck and Indian Spot-billed Duck and during winter the Demoiselle Crane, Common Eastern Crane and Bar-headed Goose. It is also home to a large diversity of fauna, some of which are highly endangered species. Wildlife seen in the surrounding hills and occasionally drinking the dam water includes wolf, leopard, sloth bear, hyena, jackal, jungle cat, sambar deer, nilgai or blue bull, chasingh, chinkara and rabbit, and Crocodiles sunbathe on the banks of the dam. This is an exceptional area for leopard sightings and exceptional wildlife and bird watching experiences.

You can easily reach Jawai Dam by road, air and rail, the nearest railway station to reach here by train is Pali Marwar Railway Station which is located at Suri, about 120 kilometers from here. To reach here by air, the nearest airport is located in Jodhpur at a distance of about 72 kilometers. The nearest bus stand to reach here by bus or road is Pali Bus Station, which is located at a distance of about 115 kilometers from here.
