Doctors are God and they save their patients by any means, the truth of this is seen even more when doctors save patients suffering from rare diseases by using rare methods. One such case was seen in Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. When doctors successfully treated a one and half month old newborn without surgery and gave him life.
This child, weighing just 1.8 kg, was suffering from a problem of patent ductus arteriosus i.e. a hole in the heart. In such a situation, Fortis Hospital’s Director Pediatric Cardiology Dr Neeraj Awasthi and his team closed this hole with the help of Piccolo device closure. Usually the process of PDA closure is surgical, but in this case, a non-surgical procedure was adopted because this little baby already had many other health problems due to which his condition was very critical. In such a situation, surgery was a risky task. After the non-surgical procedure that lasted for about an hour, the patient was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition in four days.

The condition of the child was very bad
When the patient was brought to the hospital for treatment, his condition was very serious and he was having difficulty breathing due to symptoms of sepsis. Also, there were symptoms of heart failure, the patient’s heart rate was also increased and he was sweating a lot. He was unable to take any feed and his liver was also enlarged and he was not gaining weight.
In such a case, an echocardiogram revealed a patent ductus arteriosus. In most babies with normal hearts, the PDA shrinks on its own within a few days of birth, but if it persists for a longer period, it causes extra blood flow to the lungs, leading to multi-organ dysfunction.
This improvement was seen in the child
Despite antibiotics and other medications, the newborn’s condition continued to deteriorate due to difficulty in breathing. The doctors then opted for the Piccolo device closure procedure, which was challenging given the baby’s low weight and symptoms of sepsis. However, it was successful and now during follow-up, 6 weeks after the completion of treatment, the patient’s condition has improved. He is gaining weight and all other heart functions are normal.
This disease is congenital in children
Dr Neeraj Awasthi said, ‘Patent ductus arteriosus is a congenital defect in children, which often remains undiagnosed. Due to this condition in infants, the flow of circulation blood is affected, which can cause damage to many organs. In this case, the condition of the newborn was very critical and his weight was also low. Due to such low weight and the problem of systemic inflammation, it was not easy to close the hole in the baby’s heart. Therefore, we opted for PDA device closure, with the help of which the hole was closed without surgery. Earlier, this special procedure has been adopted only in a few high-risk cases. If this child was not treated on time, it would have been difficult to save his life.
Similarly, another newborn weighing 1.6 kg was also having difficulty breathing when brought to the hospital with PDA 3.5 mm. He was also discharged from the hospital after being successfully treated with the Piccolo device closure procedure.
Dr Vikram Agarwal, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, said, “The case was quite challenging considering the age and critical condition of the newborn but despite all the difficulties and complications, accurate medical assessment and successful procedures by the doctors of the hospital resulted in saving the life of the patient.”
