A patient of monkeypox, which has caused havoc in many countries of the world including Africa, has also been found in India. The laboratory test of the suspected patient found in India has confirmed monkeypox. Currently, the patient has been kept in the isolation ward made for monkeypox in a hospital in Delhi and is being monitored.
A few days ago, the Union Health Ministry had asked to reserve wards for monkeypox patients in AIIMS, Safdarjung, RML and Lady Harding Medical College. Only suspected cases were to be kept in AIIMS and after confirmation, they were to be transferred to Safdarjung Hospital. Apart from these, isolation wards have also been created for monkeypox in LNJP and Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital. Therefore, this patient has been admitted to the isolation ward of LNJP Hospital.

The information given by the central government states that this 26-year-old youth has returned from a trip to a country with an infection of monkeypox. At present, the patient is clinically stable and does not have any other disease or serious symptoms of monkeypox. He is suffering from the West African clade-2 virus. It is a matter of relief that even though this patient is infected with monkeypox, the virus found in the test is not related to the epidemic spreading in Africa.
According to health experts, there is no need to panic or get scared even after a patient has been found in India. The reason for this is the Clade-2 virus found in the patient.
Professor Dr. Suneet K. Singh, Director, Dr. Ambedkar Centre for Biomedical Research, New Delhi, says that there are two types of viruses that spread monkeypox. The first is Clade 1 and the second is Clade 2. Currently, the monkeypox that is spreading in East and Central Africa is due to the Clade 1 virus. The WHO has declared it a global health emergency.
Not only this, historically, Clade-1 has been found responsible for severe disease. 10 percent of the people who died of ampox were also suffering from this virus. The infection rate and severity of the Clade-2 virus is much less. Therefore, the Clade-1 virus is more dangerous, infectious and deadly than the Clade-2 virus.
In such a situation, even though there is a positive patient of monkeypox in India, but from the year 2022 till now, 30 cases of this clade-2 virus have been reported in India, which are not part of the World Health Organization’s health emergency. Infections and deaths in Africa are due to clade-1. Therefore, keep taking precautions in India and do not panic.
