Srinagar/Garhwal: Hand, foot and mouth disease is being seen in children at this time. Every day 4 to 5 children suffering from this disease are reaching the base hospital of Srinagar Garhwal. Hand, foot and mouth disease is an infectious disease that mainly affects young children. It is usually caused by a virus called Coxsackievirus. Symptoms of this disease include fever, sore throat and small blisters or rashes in hands, feet and mouth. Children also have difficulty in eating and drinking due to these blisters. This disease usually spreads through coughing, sneezing or coming in contact with an infected person.

What is hand, foot and mouth disease
Dr. CM Sharma of the Pediatrics Department of Base Hospital said that this disease is caused by the Coxsackie virus and spreads rapidly from one child to another. This is a viral disease which gets cured within a week. He said that it is spreading the most in children aged 2-5 years.

Dr. Sharma said that along with giving necessary medicines to the children arriving at the base hospital, their family members are also being advised to take care of them. He said that there is no need to panic much in this disease. It ends within a week but caution is required.

According to Dr. Sharma, if a child is infected, do not send him to school and keep him away from other children for a few days. So that other children do not get infected. He said that if a child is having difficulty swallowing food or has many blisters, then consult a doctor.

Symptoms of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease
Dr. CM Sharma of the Pediatrics Department said that the disease begins with high fever which is one of its initial symptoms. The child may have a dry throat, small red rashes or blisters on the palms and soles. Due to this the child does not feel hungry. Children do not eat food due to pain caused by ulcers in the mouth.

How to prevent disease
Dr. Sharma said that to avoid hand, foot and mouth disease, teach children about cleanliness. Wash hands regularly with soap and water. Especially before eating and after using the bathroom. Stay away from infected children and do not touch the things used by them. Avoid children from touching their mouth, nose and eyes. Keep the house and toys clean. Cover the mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing. If anyone shows symptoms like fever or rashes, contact the doctor immediately. These simple measures can help in avoiding the disease.
