The New York Post reports according to Viral videos on TikTok and other social media platforms claim that drinking baking soda i.e. sodium bicarbonate dissolved in water balances the body’s pH level and helps in weight loss. Some people also believe that consuming baking soda can reduce the acidity of the body, which can reduce extra body fat. After this claim, people have started following this trend, although health experts have warned people not to do so.
According to experts, drinking baking soda mixed with water is called soda loading. It is rich in sodium. According to the American Heart Association, the daily intake of sodium should not exceed 2,300 mg and one teaspoon of baking soda contains 1,200 mg of sodium. The pH of baking soda is about 8.3 and consuming too much soda can cause metabolic alkalosis, in which the body pH is more than 7.45. This can damage the heart and reduce blood flow to the brain and oxygen flow to the body tissues.
Health experts told Healthline that there is no solid scientific evidence on the claim of baking soda to reduce weight. Regular consumption of baking soda can cause many health problems. Excessive consumption of baking soda can cause gas, bloating and other digestive problems. Baking soda contains high amounts of sodium, which can increase blood pressure and put more pressure on the kidneys. This can cause kidney problems. Doctors do not recommend drinking water with baking soda, as it can cause many problems.
