Therefore, to explain its importance to people and tell about its benefits, International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21 June every year (International Yoga Day 2025). Yoga helps to overcome many health related problems. Meanwhile, a study conducted by AIIMS doctors has shown that yoga improves the cognitive ability of patients suffering from light and medium levels. Also, the problem of mental stress, depression and high blood pressure is also controlled, so yoga is beneficial in the treatment of light and moderate Alzheimer’s. What does study say?
AIIMS’s Anatomy and doctors of the Department of Neurology have conducted this study, which has been published in the Medical Journal Frontiers in Aging. Dr. Reema Dada, Professor of AIIMS Department of Anatomy Department, said that this study was done on 30 elders living in the old age home. It consisted of 18 men and 12 women. All of them had a light to moderate level Alzheimer’s disease. This weakens the patient’s memory. Thinking and behavior also change. This disease is not completely cured. This disease keeps increasing over time. Around five crore people worldwide suffer from it. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ten percent of people above 65 years of age are suffering from this disease. By 2050, this figure can increase to 22 percent. Therefore, this study was done to know the effect of yoga on Alzheimer’s patients.
Performing yoga daily beneficial
People involved in the study were given yoga for 12 weeks. During this time, he was paid various asanas, pranayama and meditation for six days a week and for one hour daily. Before starting yoga and after doing yoga, their health and cognitive ability were examined. The study found that yoga reduced the problem of stress, depression and high blood pressure in Alzheimer’s patients. There was also a change in his behavior and language. His memory and the problem of late remembering things improved. This improved their quality of life, so if Alzheimer’s patients do yoga daily, then they can get the benefit of it.
The following yogasanas were given to the people involved in the study
Surya Namaskar ten minutes daily
Intensive rest for five to seven minutes
Asanas like Pawanmuktasana, Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana, Ardhamatsyandrasana, Mandukasana, Tadasana, Trigonasana and Ardhachakaraan for 15-18 minutes
Meditation for 10 minutes per day
