Story of Yaksha Hemmali of Kubera
According to ancient stories, Kubera, the king of Alkapuri, was absorbed in devotion to Lord Shiva. It was the duty of his servant Yaksha Hemmali that he used to take flowers from Mansarovar every day to worship Shiva in the temple. Hemmali’s wife Vishalakshi was extremely beautiful and her great attachment. One day Hemmali got busy with his wife in his house and could not reach the temple. When Kubera Maharaj came to know this, he got angry and thrown Hemmali out of the temple by giving them leprosy disease. Hemmali suffering from leprosy went to the ascetic sage Markandeya on the mountains. The sage understood his pain and advised him to observe the Yogini Ekadashi fast of Ashada Krishna Paksha.

According to the order of Muni, Hemmali fasted for Yogini Ekadashi, which cured her leprosy and she became healthy again. After this, Lord Krishna said that the person who performs this fast, his sins are destroyed and he gets merit equal to eating food to eight -thousand Brahmins.
