Khartoum, Sep 16 (IANS) Nearly 40 civilians were killed in an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a village in central Sudan, according to non-governmental group Abu Ghouta Resistance Committee.
“The RSF attacked the village of Gouj al-Naka in the Abu Ghouta region of Gezira province,” the committee said in a statement.
News agency Xinhua quoted the committee’s statement as saying that the RSF is not returning the bodies to the displaced villagers for cremation. Because of this, many bodies are lying in the open in the village.
The committee has appealed to civil society organizations to put pressure on the RSF to allow people to enter the village and bury the dead.
RSF has not yet commented on the attack.
The RSF took control of Gezira state in December 2023. This happened after the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) retreated from the state capital, Wad Madani.
Sudan has been embroiled in a violent conflict between the SAF and the RSF since April 15, 2023. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 16,650 people and displaced millions.
